Dear Sir or Madam,

Please let me introduce myself, my name is Richard Darlington, I am currently studying my Bachelors Degree in Product Design at The University of Salford, in Manchester, UK. I am looking to obtain a full time internship for Summer 2013.

Although I am only in my second year of study, I have already completed two internships in New York City, for Stark Design NY, ACR Studios and a commission for a NY fashion designer, Carly Ellis.

Art and Design is, and always has been my biggest passion in life. My need to learn, improve and grow as a designer has been reflected in my achievements so far, for example whilst working at Stark I developed a Bluetooth headset to concept level, which I continued to work on from the UK on the request of the CEO after my internship had ended.

During my time with ACR studios I designed an art installation, which was a modern depiction of the French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat. It involved extensive model making and fabrication.

Whilst working with Carly Ellis, I shared with her my ideas to design a laser cut jewelry line to go alongside her clothing range. I was given full creative control, both designing and hand manufacturing the pieces. My designs where showcased in her New York Fashion Week runway presentation at Milk Studios, and featured on the front cover of The New York Times Style section.

Furthermore, after undertaking a live brief set by Milk design UK for their client supermarket chain ASDA, my design for a children’s disposable food packaging was chosen to be developed further.

I am more than familiar with the fast pace, demanding and committed role of a designer, and pride myself on my dedication, problem solving and efficiency.

My personal design style I am still yet to fully discover, but my obsession with user end satisfaction and interaction creates a symphony between practicality and aesthetics. Automotive and reusable design are areas that interest me greatly.

I use detailed research to inform and create my designs, which are then perfected using soft modeling techniques. I also use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to develop the designs further giving me an in depth knowledge of all relevant Adobe suites.

I hope to work in an environment that is challenging, offering opportunities for me to further myself as a designer and believe that my experience, enthusiasm and determination would be an asset to any design team.

Alongside my studies I continue to attain valuable knowledge by rebuilding and remodeling my 1990 Land Rover Defender, taking it apart and rebuilding it piece by piece.

I have also dedicated myself to many adventures, such as running marathons, trekking through Morocco, building a sewage system in India, leading a Scout Group and completing the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh award, to name but a few.

I do nothing half heartedly and anything I begin I must complete to the highest of standards. If I have not exceeded all expectations that is simply not good enough. I have always believed in working relentlessly to gain success and achieve my goals, undertaking every task with a need for perfection.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my work and me and I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Richard Darlington
